Have you registered to vote?

As you may have heard, there may be a General Election around the corner so it's really important that you've registered to vote! We've put together a few FAQs that you might find helpful.

FAQs

What is the deadline to register?

As we don't yet know the date of the election, we can't say exactly what the deadline is. So register now!

What will I need to register?

  • Your National Insurance number
  • Your date of birth
  • Term-time address (if you're registering at uni)

Can I be registered at home and at uni?

Yes, as a student you can register to vote at both your home and term time address. But it is important to know that for a general election, you can only vote in one place. It is illegal to vote in both. Have a look at this page on students registering to vote for more information.

Where do I go to register?

Have a look at this page to register online.

How can I check if I'm already registered in York?

Unfortunately, you can't do this online so you'll need to contact your local electoral registration office. For York, this is:

York City Council

Can I vote if I'm an international student?

Unfortunately, if you are an EU citizen (and not from the UK) you cannot vote in national UK parliamentary elections. Citizens from certain other countries are able to vote, such as the Commonwealth nations, so have a look at this page to see if you are eligible to vote.

We can't emphasise enough how important it is that you are registered to vote. Hopefully these FAQs have helped, but we will also be sending more information closer to the time, with details and some blogs from our Sabbatical Officers!
