Sabbs’ Winter Update

As we prepare ourselves for the roaring 20s to get underway, we wanted to round off the decade with a highlights reel of what we have been up to as an Officer Team this term!

First up was Freshers’ Week, where we had a great time being out and about meeting loads of new students, Colleges, Sports and Societies Committees at Welcome Talks and various Events. Amidst the buzz we also managed to squeeze the Great York Walk in to help fundraise for the Mentally Fit York Fund.

RAG week came around in Week 5 and we were presented with a new challenge: abseiling down the iconic building that is Central Hall. Joined by lots of students, we faced our fears, *cough cough Samara*, in order to raise money for the three RAG Charities. The sides of the building have surprisingly little grip which led to much amusement for everyone gathered at the bottom.

It was announced that a General Election would take place on the 12th December. We delivered a joint ‘Register to Vote’ campaign in conjunction with the GSA and teamed up with YSJ to hold hustings for both the York Central and York Outer constituencies.

The second half of term also saw industrial action by members of UCU. In preparation for this, the Union published some Industrial Action Guidance to help students impacted by the strikes. We also hosted a Student Forum alongside the GSA, which gave students the opportunity to ask questions of senior representatives at the University and the UCU. Following this, we asked you for your opinion on this wave of industrial action, to inform the stance the Union would take.

Over the last couple of weeks we have all been hard at work preparing for Term 2. This will all be kicked off with Keep Your Cool during Week 1. Spoiler alert, this will see the return of the Kitchen Retreats at the Kitchen at Alcuin from 8pm-12pm Monday to Friday. Look out for more information on our social media channels.

Hope you are all having a great holiday and we will see you back in the New Year.

Merry Christmas, from the Sabbs.
