Why should I nominate myself?

Nominating yourself to run for a student leader position means that you want to advocate for the interests and rights of your fellow students. You will learn loads running for election and meet lots of interesting people.

If elected, you’ll represent York students at a University level and there will be opportunities to get involved in policy work and student movements nationally. It’s a wonderful opportunity to develop transferable skills and work on projects in partnership with students and YUSU and University staff.

As an elected Officer or Rep you will take on a leadership role within a multi-million pound charity and shape the political and strategic direction of your Union. You will lead campaigns on the issues from your manifesto and make positive changes for and with students.

This is a particularly exciting time to be taking on a leadership role at YUSU. We are in the early stages of developing our strategic priorities for the next 5 years, and as an Officer or a Rep you will have the opportunity to feed in and shape the next YUSU strategy. We already know a key priority will be working with the University to widen participation in all the opportunities York has to offer and to build a more diverse and inclusive campus.

Being an Officer or Representative you will:

Take your ideas to the highest University boards with University managers
Full time and Part time Officers will be members of Officer Group, making important decisions for the union and setting campaign agendas
Develop a whole host of skills including leadership, budgeting and project management
Contribute to the planning of Freshers week and other YUSU led events
Be supported by Union staff and other students to deliver your ideas
Get to meet amazing student leaders from all over the country
