Complaints and Conduct

Complaints to or about the University

The University complaints process covers both academic and non-academic issues and is available for students to raise concerns or dissatisfaction about the standard of a service provided by the University, action or lack of action taken by the institution, issues relating to University staff and more general issues that may have affected their studies or their time at University.

Our advisers can provide confidential and independent advice and support on making a complaint and guide you through the process.

Making a complaint:

  • In the first instance a complaint can be raised informally and for consideration by the head of the relevant department or service, via the informal complaints form, setting out the details of the issues that you wish to raise and the resolution you are seeking and including any relevant evidence.

  • If you are unhappy with the outcome at this stage, you can then submit a formal complaint to the Registrar & Secretary’s Office.

  • We strongly advise that you get in touch with the advice services at YUSU or the GSA (for postgraduate students) for information and guidance on the process, and advice on your circumstances.

More information on the complaints process is available on the University’s website.

Student conduct

All students are expected to adhere to a code of conduct whilst at University. Any disciplinary complaints are dealt with under Regulation 7. If you wish to report misconduct or make a complaint against another student, or if you are the subject of a disciplinary investigation, we can help to guide you through the University’s procedure. We can also attend investigatory or formal meetings with you, and help you prepare for these.

You can also report incidents of student misconduct via the University’s online reporting system. If you would like to discuss the situation in a confidential and safe environment before going through the reporting system, please contact us and we will explain the process and help signpost you to relevant support, if necessary.

If you are part of a sports club, society or volunteering group at YUSU, you will be governed by the YUSU code of conduct and can raise a complaint or concern to the relevant member of staff in the first instance. If you are unsure of who this is, please let us know and we can signpost you to the right person.

'If you would like confidential and independent advice and guidance on the processes outlined before, or would like to discuss your situation and reporting and support options, you can find contact details for the Advice & Support Centre here.'
