Why advertise in the student market?

YUSU Marketing was established in 2002 and since then we have conducted marketing and promotional campaigns on behalf of a diverse range of local and national advertisers. It is because we deal directly with the student market on a day-to-day basis that we can offer you the best option to promote your product/service. Whether you are promoting a national brand or trying to kick-start a small business, our high quality service provides the perfect opportunity.

“Students are an obvious market for sellers of alcohol, clothes, phones and entertainment, spending a large proportion of their income on such products”
(Unite/MORI Student Living Report 2004)

The national student market has an estimated spending power of £10 billion p.a. Like most adults, the majority of a student’s money is spent on accommodation. Although a quarter of students (mainly those living in the family home) pay nothing, those who do spend an average of £72 per week. Accommodation aside, other items of major expenditure include; food, drink, entertainment and socialising. On average, students spend around £29 a week on food, and between £18 and £23 on alcohol. Alcohol and entertainment account for £34 of an average students expenditure a week, or around £140 a month for the average student. (This figure rises to over £200 if that student is a smoker)

In a typical month, an average of a further £30 is spent on mobile phones, £33 on clothes, £10 on CD’s, records and tapes and £7 of DVDs and videos – a total of £80 a month for each student.

There are currently over 10,000 students studying at The University of York, and the continued success and expansion of the institution means this number will swell over the coming years. In 2003 York was awarded the prestigious title of The Sunday Times University of the Year, and is a fixture in the top six of all of the UK’s University rankings. York students not only inject millions into the local economy each year, but are also destined to be the decision makers and 'big-spenders' of the future.

Through our daily interaction with York students, YUSU has developed unique ways of communicating our own promotions to our membership. We have developed these communication tools to allow commercial organisations full exposure to the student market. So whether you are a small independent business or a national organisation seeking to reach York students, we will be happy to help you!
